CARRICK COUNCILLOR'S SHOCK CLAIM…. MONAGHAN PARENTS TAKING OUT 200% LOANS TO BUY CHRISTMAS PRESENTS FOR THEIR CHILDREN!

Some Co Monaghan parents had been forced into taking out loans from moneylenders at interest rates as high as 200% in order to be able to purchase Christmas presents for their children, Sinn Féin’s Matt Carthy claimed at Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council.
Referring to correspondence which had been received from Fine Gael TD for Cavan/Monaghan Heather Humphreys on the issue of capping interest rates for moneylenders – a subject the Council have been making representations on in recent times – Colr Carthy was critical of Deputy Humphreys for voting against a recent Private Members Motion in the Dail on this issue which had been put forward by SF Deputy Pearse Doherty.
Colr Carthy said that by supporting the motion, Deputy Humphreys would have helped eliminate a situation where some people in this county were borrowing money at 200% interest rates in order to pay for their Christmas presents next month.
