Our photograph by Rory Geary shows the interior of a disused mushroom shed in the Clontibret area of Co Monaghan uncovered as the location for an illegal oil laundering operation in a raid by Revenue officials and Gardai yesterday, Wednesday morning.
A Revenue spokesperson said that the plant had the capacity to launder approximately two million litres of fuel a year, at a loss of approximately €1 million to the Exchequer.
A quantity of toxic sludge was also found at the scene, along with 10,000 litres of laundered fuel, bleaching agent and two motor vehicles, all of which were seized.
The Clontibret swoop follows an unrelated incident at Creighanroe in Castleblayney on Tuesday when five tonnes of toxic sludge were discovered in a lorry.
