Local communities in Bawn and Latton were shocked and saddened at the death of a young man from the area in a single-vehicle accident that took place outside Shercock on Sunday evening.
Killian McElroy, from Lisiniskey, Shantonagh, who had turned 18 earlier this month, was thrown from a van he was driving when it overturned after hitting the verge, on the Kingscourt road about a mile outside Shercock at 5pm on Sunday. It is understood that he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 17-year-old male passenger was taken to Cavan General Hospital, but his injuries were not life-threatening.
The sense of loss at Mr McElroy’s untimely death was reflected in the huge attendance at his funeral Mass in St Patrick’s Church, Bawn yesterday (Wednesday), where chief celebrant Fr Tom Quigley PP was joined by Fr Michael Daly PP Donaghmoyne, Fr Jerry White SS CC Tanagh and Fr Kevin Donohoe, the former chaplain at St Aidan’s Comprehensive School, Cootehill.
Killian, who had been a popular student at St Aidan’s, is survived by his parents Eamonn and Carmel and his brothers and sisters Elaine, Darren, Gary and Dervla.
