There was great jubilation amongst her supporters last Sat evening 28th April, in the National Boxing Stadium, Dublin when Dolores Hughes from the Emyvale Club won the National Title in the Girls Under 14 yrs, 54 kg Category.
Dolores had qualified for the National Championships via her success in claiming the Ulster title earlier in the month.
She paved her way to the National Final by defeating the Leinster Champion, Sarah White, Tredagh Boxing Club Drogheda in the semi final the previous evening Fri 27th.
In that contest the Emyvale girl recovered from a slow start to dominate proceedings as the bout developed. The contest was level going into the 2nd round but Dolores was now scoring well with good combinations and forging ahead on points. This trend continued into the 3rd round, and when Hughes caught her opponent with a good right to the body, White fell to her knees. The Drogheda girl was clearly in no fit state to continue and the referee intervened, stopping the contest with about ½ min of the final round remaining.
