IRISH BOXERS FIGHT BACK TO TAKE THE PLAUDITS OVER ENGLAND IN FOUR SEASONS SHOWDOWN
A Cavan/Monaghan Select team representing Ireland fought back from early English domination to come out on top in an International bill of boxing held in the Four Seasons Hotel, Monaghan last Saturday night. Presented by the Cavan/Monaghan Boxing County Board the bill featured sixteen top class contests and two exhibitions between a Cavan/Monaghan Select team and a team from the Jimmy Egan Boxing Academy, Manchester.
To get proceedings underway piper Tom McSkeane escorted all thirty six boxers down the ring walk to ringside where they were greeted and introduced into the ring by Master of Ceremonies for the evening Sean McCaffery from Northern Sound Radio. Following the introductions each boxer exchanged pendants with their opponent in the ring as a show of mutual respect.
The action got underway with an exhibition bout in the girls 40Kg division between Courtney McCarthy of Manchester and Naoise McDermott from Cootehill. McCarthy showing those extra touches of class in all three rounds.
Next up was a 44Kg contest between Emyvale’s Kieran Kelly and Abdulla Wandawi of Manchester with Wandawi taking a points victory by 13-9. Right from the opening bell Wandawi showed his class with quick snappy jabs, fast combinations on the inside and fast in and out movement. Kelly scored well …
