A local couple who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently were honoured to receive a congratulatory message from none other than the Obamas!
Sean and Peggy Gunn from Greenan’s Cross, which is located between Threemilehouse and Newbliss, were married in New York on 16th September 1961.
The couple returned to the Big Apple to celebrate their Golden wedding anniversary and renew their marriage vows with a Mass in St Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre.
The celebrant was Father Adrian McHugh from Mayo.
After the Mass the celebrations continued in Monaghan’s Bar and Restaurant, which is owned by Peggy and Sean’s son Niall and his wife Kathleen.
It was when messages of congratulations from well-wishers were being read out that the couple discovered that a card had been sent from U.S President Barack and his wife Michelle.
Speaking to the Northern Standard Sean and Peggy told of their delight at receiving the message. “It was a major surprise. We feel so privileged and it will take pride of place in our home.”
The couple wish to extend their sincere thanks to their daughter Geraldine, her husband Mike, their son Niall and his wife Kathleen for all the effort put in to ensure the special day was enjoyed by all.
