Spoilt for choice? – Fifteen candidates in the Cavan/Monaghan field

Fifteen candidates had declared their intention to contest the General Election in the Cavan/Monaghan constitency when the deadline for nominations closed at lunchtime yesterday (Wednesday).
The crowded field boasts four Fine Gael hopefuls, two candidates each for Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin, one Labour and one Green Party representative, and five non-party contenders.
There were several late-comers to the field this week, their identities reflecting in part the discernible upsurge nationally in candidates not aligned to established political groupings seeking to take advantage of the perceived disenchantment with the party political status quo.
Politics student Darcy Lonergan from Carrickmacross was announced as the Green Party’s candidate in the constituency.
Joseph Duffy from Cordevlis South in Stranooden and retired photographer T J Fay from Virginia, Co Cavan have once again re-entered the Cavan/Monaghan fray as Independent candidates.
Claims manager Caroline Forde from Ardkeen, Cavan is running on the platform of the preservation of jobs at Quinn Insurance, one of the pressing local issues in the constituency.
Missing from the list of candidates confirmed yesterday was the name of Jonathan Rainey, the Ballyjamesduffd man who late last year announced his intention to fight the Cavan/Monaghan election with the motivation of seeking to have then Taoiseach Brian Cowen jailed for fraud were he to be elected. Although stirring some initial momentum through use of the social media, Mr Rainey, perhaps in light of his intended prey’s departure from the political stage, did not submit any nomination papers.
