DESPITE the economic downturn, which had widespread national repercussions for many local authorities, and the civic sector in general, Co. CASTLEBLAYNEY is facing a huge economic blow with the loss of over seventy jobs at the Cargill Ireland Limited meat processing plant in the Mid-Monaghan town.
Since 2002, Cargill Ireland Ltd., has leased the plant from Castleblayney Community Enterprise, which erected the premises in 1999 to help create jobs and boost the town’s then flagging economy.

Minister for Health Dr James Reilly should consider resigning from office for his failure to live up to promises made before the last General Election in relation to services at Monaghan General Hospital, it was suggested at Monday’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council.

The staff of The Northern Standard and R. & S. Printers Ltd., found themselves in deep mourning for the second time in recent months when they learned of the passing of Mrs Bernie Gray, 64 Beechgrove Lawns at the Mater Hospital, Dublin on Friday, 3rd February.
Aged 64, Bernie was the second in the family of 14 children of Patrick and Kathleen Smyth, Duncinaire and formerly of Dr. McKenna Terrace. Bernie’s sister Jean Sherry, Dr. McKenna Terrace, passed away at her residence on Saturday, 8th October 2011.

Monaghan Co Council agreed on Monday to seek an urgent meeting with Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton in an initiative to boost employment creation in the county by heightening its profile as a magnet for inward investment.

The Challenge:
Over a route of 300 Kilometres over six days, twelve men will paddle in two man kayaks starting from Killaloe in county Clare, carrying all their kit and head north up the river Shannon to Leitrim, finishing up in Clones and onto Glaslough Village for the homecoming!
A team of twelve men from the surrounding area of Glaslough in Co. Monaghan, started kayak training in the middle of September last year as complete novices.

A Cavan/Monaghan Select team representing Ireland fought back from early English domination to come out on top in an International bill of boxing held in the Four Seasons Hotel, Monaghan last Saturday night. Presented by the Cavan/Monaghan Boxing County Board the bill featured sixteen top class contests and two exhibitions between a Cavan/Monaghan Select team and a team from the Jimmy Egan Boxing Academy, Manchester.
